The online lottery trend is quickly through the various world lotteries. The online lottery wave in the US started after the Illinois online lottery platform officially went live in March. It was a great moment for the American lottery players as it was the first time lottery players could buy lottery tickets to popular lottery games such as the Mega Millions from the comfort of their homes.

Additionally, the online lottery platform managed to prove lottery skeptics wrong by grossing about $15000 just on its first day of launch. The reaction from most of the fans was positive and the first online lottery ticket was bought just three minutes after the Illinois online lottery website went live. The success of the platform was too huge to be ignored and the rest of US lotteries are looking at the Illinois lottery site as a benchmark for their site.

Earlier there were confirmed reports that the New York lottery was to go online and hardly a month later, there are reports that the Maryland lottery officials are exploring on ways to have their own lottery site live and running by the start of 2013.

Stephen Martino, a Maryland lottery official, confirmed in an interview that the Maryland state government had approved half a million dollars to fund the Maryland lottery site. The money will go towards creating the lottery infrastructure and hiring staff specialized in handling online lottery sales.

He later added that research on the other online lottery site showed that online lottery does not lead to a decrease in the number of lottery player but rather increases the numbers. Martino further reinforced his sentiment by saying that the Maryland state will benefit significantly from the increased lottery sales.

Players will have to be over the age of 18 to legally play and claim the prizes to the lottery.
