Lottery players: regular people or fortune hunters?

Those who run the lotteries have all the reasons to come up with a definitive answer for this question, because if they can determine with pinpoint accuracy who lottery players are, they can better market their products. The task of creating a special category that is comprehensive enough to include all lottery players is a tall one, but there are a couple of criteria that can be used to narrow down the search.

Lottery is a tax on hope

This is one of the premise that many of those who criticize lotteries start from, and to some extent they are right. The authorities found out many years ago that it is much easier to collect money from the population by organizing the lottery games, instead of taxing people. Since only half of the money collected from selling lottery tickets is used for paying prizes, huge amounts are split between lottery operators, government and vendors. Roughly a quarter goes to charity, which means that at the end of the day everyone wins except for the millions of players who don’t win anything.

One reason for why the lotteries are so prosperous despite the crushing odds, is that people don’t mind paying a small amount for a chance of winning a huge sum. This explains why the vast majority of lottery players is low income individuals, who are hoping to catch a lucky break. For these people it is very difficult to close the gap separating them from the ones living in high society, and they regard the lottery as the only way out. It might sound harsh, but this is the reality and statistics prove it beyond any doubt.

Casual gamblers and fun-loving people

Not all of those who play the lottery are taking the games very seriously, and purchasing tickets are nothing more than a welcomed diversion. Many lottery players are regular people with decently paid jobs, and even some who earn way above average. They like the idea of gambling a bit, but loath casinos and are fully aware of the perils associated with gambling addiction so they prefer to stay out. For these people, buying lottery tickets and watching the draws live is enough to satisfy the need for adrenaline.

While high income players are less numerous, they are the ones who acquire more tickets for each draw for the simple reason that they can afford it. It makes no difference to them how high the jackpot is, and they couldn’t care less about lottery strategies advertised online, because they take lotto lightly. Last but not least, there are people who are fully committed to finding a way of beating the odds, and these are the most perseverance ones, who purchase the most tickets and are on an endless search for winning systems.
