It’s a Mistake, It’s Fate, It’s Luck… You Decide!

It’s one thing to buy a lottery ticket and win, it’s another thing to actually buy a winning lottery ticket by mistake and win! This doesn’t happen often, but when it does it directs glaring limelight on the person who won the lottery by mistake. What happens then? Well, we all know that…“If you want to win a lottery, buy the ticket by mistake!” is what most people would slyly say and why not, it’s true too! What else would you expect?!

Once Upon a Time in Lithonia

We all know the odds of winning the Powerball; you’re more likely to fall, explode, burn, crash and fall off the plane than win the Powerball! Okay, maybe I exaggerated a little, but you get the point. Here’s a woman who defeated all odds without even trying! Say what?! Kathy Scruggs, from Lithonia – Georgia, won a solid $25 million Powerball jackpot only because the store clerk gave her the lottery ticket by mistake. She wanted to buy the Mega Millions but was instead handed over A Powerball slip.

She realized she was $25 million richer a day after she bought the ticket and the rest you can tell… excitement, joy, screams and a smiling Kathy Scruggs! Kathy, who was desperately looking for jobs (and who doesn’t require any now!), will use her lottery winnings to build a house for her mother and her grandmother, and to help the homeless by starting foundations. She will also be providing dental assistance for those in need. Lady in shining armor, we think!

The Curious Lottery Case of Thuan Le

Thuan Le, a Southern Californian mother of four, usually spends about $5 on lottery tickets as part of her regular lotto routine. One lucky morning, when she was on her way to buy lottery tickets for $5 at a Mission Viejo in California, she accidentally dropped an extra dollar in the machine for the extra SuperLotto Plus lottery ticket and decided to take her chances.

As soon as she realized that the ticket she purchased by mistake was the winning ticket, she screamed in joy and immediately called her sons! She quickly drove to the California Lottery’s Santa Ana office and came back home with a jaw-dropping $14 million! The happy mother would be using her lottery prize to travel, buy a house and finally visit her parents in Vietnam. Now if only this could happen every day, I say…

The Chronicles of Lottery Winner Jerry Kajfasz

Jerry Kajfasz, much like Thuan Le, regularly buys lottery tickets to test his luck. And so on a lucky Saturday evening, Jerry stopped by Depew One Stop on Broadway to buy some cigars (like a boss!) and scratch-off New York Lottery tickets. The clerk mistakenly handed over a $20 Win for Life Spectacular ticket along with some scratch-off lottery tickets. Jerry corrected the clerk, took only the tickets he wanted, leaving behind the $20 Win for Life Spectacular ticket, and left the store. Nothing usual here, right?

Jerry won around seven scratch-off lottery tickets in a row amassing $25. With that in hand Jerry went back to the store and requested the clerk to give him the same ticket he had given him earlier by mistake. After scratching the Win for Life Spectacular ticket, the 53-year old couldn’t believe what he saw – he was $10 million richer in seconds! Call it the very, very lucky $10 million! Jerry, who has already retired from his printing job in Amherst, is looking forward to caring of his family and taking his mother to her native place in Poland. Lucky clerk or lucky Jerry?

Scott Bennett and the Lucky Lottery Mistake

New Hampshire Tri State Megabucks winner

Next on our list is Hillsborough resident Scott Bennett, a New Hampshire Tri State Megabucks winner of a whopping $2.1 million by mistake. Two years and four days before Christmas, Bennett went out to buy two lottery tickets; one for Lucky For Life and one for Tri State Megabucks Plus at the Hillsborough Circle K. The clerk (what’s with these clerks anyway!) sold him two Tri State Megabucks Plus lottery tickets instead of one and you know what happened next. Scott won a cool $2.1 million just in time for Christmas! Last year the Bennetts bought an old Victorian house and plan to pay off the hefty college loans for their children. Unlike the others, they continue to work because they enjoy their jobs! The loyalty pays off!
