La Primitiva Review

La Primitiva Lottery Review

Known as the world’s oldest lottery, La Primitiva from Spain is still incredibly popular. One of the main reasons for its fame is the new award structure that came into effect in 2012. Ever since, La Primitiva has accumulated larger jackpots than ever before.

The Spanish Lottery (Loteria Nacional) which manages this lottery, states that its main purpose is “sharing the success of lotto payout among as many participants as we can.”  This claim isn’t exaggerated and La Primitiva does hand out a big number of prizes per every single drawing.

La Primitiva drawings take place on Saturday and Thursday every week. Approximately 70 percent of the funds generated through ticket sales are put back into prizes. Through this mechanism, La Primitiva guarantees some pretty spectacular awards. This is one of the highest percentages among all of the international lotteries. Usually, a much bigger sum is dedicated to good causes and funding specialized activities. Needless to say, La Primitiva players have nothing to complain about when it comes to prize allocations.

How to Play La Primitiva

In order to play this game, the participant has to select six numbers from 1 to 49. There are two drawings per week. The green ticket can be played for the Monday or Thursday drawing,  and the brown ticket can be played for the Friday or Saturday drawing.

La Primitiva Rules

Being one of the oldest lotteries in the world, La Primitva was modified a few times to become even more exciting. The latest change in gameplay occurred in 2012. The rules of La Primitiva are relatively simple, but they do come with a twist. To win the standard jackpot, you’ll need to have 6 correct numbers from a pool of 49. For a shot at getting your hands on the biggest prize, you will need to have the 6 numbers correct and the reimbursement number that comes in the range from 0 to 9.

La Primitiva has 5 additional prize tiers. The second prize tier consists of 5 correct numbers plus a bonus number. Deciding to play with a bonus number will increase the size of the second prize significantly.

A single La Primitiva ticket costs 1 euro, which is one of the reasons why the game is so popular in Spain.

Another very important reason for the popularity of La Primitiva is that Spain doesn’t have an income tax on lottery prizes. Thus, if you win the jackpot, you will be paid a lump sum without any deductions. Few other countries that have massive lotteries can brag with similar regulations. If you’re an international player, you’ll simply have to be mindful about taxation rules in your own country.

La Primitiva Lottery Odds

Since it’s a standard 6 put of 49 game, La Primitiva comes with one of the most common odds of winning the jackpot in the world – 1 in 13.98 million.

With the 2012 change in prize structure, a special reimbursement number was added. This special award category is handed out to people that have the 6 numbers for the drawing, plus the reimbursement number in the range from 0 to 9. The odds of having all 7 numbers correct are 1 in 139,838,160.

There’s another special prize tier that consists of getting 5 numbers correct plus a bonus number. This bonus number has an effect solely on the second prize tier. The odds of hitting this numerical combination are 1 in 2.33 million.

The prize tiers also include the third one for 5 correct numbers (1 in 55,491), the fourth one for 4 correct numbers (1 in 1,032), the fifth category for 3 correct numbers (1 in 56.6) and getting solely the reimbursement number correct (1 in 10).

The overall odds of winning any La Primitiva prize are 1 in 10, which is spectacular in comparison to what other large lotteries across the world have to offer.

Numbers Matched The Odds of Winning
6 Balls 1 in 13,983,816
5 Balls + bonus 1 in 2,330,636
5 Balls 1 in 54,201
4 Balls 1 in 1,032
3 Balls 1 in 57

La Primitiva Prize Breakdown

Nearly 40 percent of the money generated through ticket sales and allocated to prizes will be distributed among the people that have 6 correct numbers. This method of determining the jackpot has resulted in some pretty large awards handed to players over the years.

In 2015, the La Primitiva jackpot soared to unparalleled heights. The sum of 100 million euro was won by a single person from Barcelona on October 15, 2015. The second La Primitiva is 66.6 million euro. There have been just one winner and the lucky ticket holder became a millionaire on August 3, 2013.

As already mentioned in the previous section, a new price category has been introduced. Though the odds of having 6 correct numbers and the reimbursement number aren’t that high, the category is definitely worth giving a try to. Getting the reimbursement (reintegro) number correct, adds tens of millions of euro to the standard La Primitiva jackpot. This happens because a large portion of the proceeds (approximately 20 percent) will be allocated to the special jackpot category.

Standard jackpots start at 3 million euro. If there’s no winner for the respective drawing, the amount will roll over until it’s finally won. Apart from this lucrative possibility, La Primitiva features several other great prize tiers.

People that have 5 correct numbers can expect an average price of about 2,550 euro. If 5 numbers and the bonus number are correct, however, the prize will increase to 24,500 euro. This is yet another special perk that makes La Primitiva exciting and different from other lotteries.

Four correct numbers will produce an average prize of 70 euro. The fifth prize tier is fixed and the people that have 3 correct numbers will win 8 euro, regardless of the number of players that have a winning ticket. Getting only the reimbursement number correct will result in a symbolic prize of 1 euro.

3rd Prize Match 5 €2,550
